The leading tech experts gathered to discuss major cloud computing trends, development perspectives, and successful use cases.

Bringing CloudCamp to Eastern Europe

On April 7, 2012, Dave Nielsen, a co-founder of the CloudCamp movement who assisted in organizing more than 200 “unconferences” around the world, came to Minsk, Belarus, bringing the CloudCamp events to Eastern Europe. Although the so-called unconferences are very popular in the US and Western Europe, cloud advocates from the Eastern region did not have a chance to try a new format until now and, finally, they have found luck.

At the event, Andrei Yurkevich , CTO at Altoros, interviewed Dave Nielsen. During the interview, Dave shared his impressions from the cloud event held in Minsk, answered how it differs from those organized in the US or Western Europe, and expressed his opinion on the future cloud trends and upcoming innovations in the field.

A brief recap of the event

The spacious room could hardly seat all the attendees who are passionate about cloud computing. The conference featured leading engineers from Microsoft Russia, Fujitsu Technology Solutions, Ciklum, HP, sharing their experience in working with particular cloud systems. The experts defined the problems they faced, explained how they overcame them, and highlighted the benefits they got from using cloud solutions.

“Cloud computing is OSSM (awesome), which stands for on-demand, self-service, scalable, and measurable.” —Dave Nielsen, a co-founder of the CloudCamp movement

Thanks to the open format of the conference, the participants were free to ask any questions that never stopped appearing on white boards. During the panel discussion, the attendees selected the topics they wanted to be discussed and wrote down the questions for the experts.

Some participants took a chance to talk to Dave Nielsen (Mr. Cloud), who willingly shared his opinion on cloud trends, perspectives, some good practices, and successful cases.

During the breakout sessions, the participants could ask for additional information on the issues that still seemed unclear to them. The unconference format helps to break the barrier between the speakers and attendants, as well as encourages a more fruitful cooperation.

The team at Altoros actively participated in the panel discussions and breakout sessions.

When the sessions were over, all questions were answered, and ideas were discussed, the after-party started. Why not try the image of a brave boxer, if everything you need for it is just a console and a good company around.

The band set the mood and everybody could demonstrate their dancing talent. The atmosphere was truly positive and relaxed.

The participants also indulged themselves in some traditional Belarusian beer, which became a vital part of the event.

Finally, the sponsors of the event presented a photo camera to the winner of the lottery.

The first CloudCamp in Eastern Europe proved that informal communication with the leading experts face-to-face results in more efficient knowledge transfer.
